Do You Know the Ballad of Chevy Chase?

Dr. Ruth Perry will deliver the Chevy Chase Historical Society’s 2010 Fall Lecture on “The Ballad of Chevy Chase.” This free event takes place at 4 PM on Sunday, November 21st at the Chevy Chase Village Hall (5906 Connecticut Avenue).

“The Ballad of Chevy Chase” is an ancient sung story, one of several re-tellings of a battle on the England-Scotland border. When Lord Baltimore gave a 560-acre tract of land to Colonel Joseph E. Belt in 1725, Colonel Belt named the land grant “Cheivy Chace.” Sections of this land grant eventually became Chevy Chase, MD.

Dr. Perry will sing an abridged version of the story this Sunday.  An MIT literature professor, Dr. Perry has lectured all over the world on 18th-century English literature and culture, women’s writing and feminist theory.
