High School Men’s Basketball Spotlight

Now that December is finally here, men’s high school basketball begins in full force. Check out past stats and upcoming game information for nearby schools and see which teams to keep an eye out for during the season.

Local Bethesda-Chevy Chase Teams

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School will start the season off with first year coach David Breslaw. Though the Barons took the regional title in 2008, they came away with eight wins and thirteen losses last year. Their first game starts December 10 against St. Vincent Pallotti.

Walter Johnson High School ended last season with eight wins and sixteen losses. New coach Matt Karver, who played basketball in Europe professionally, will lead the Wildcats for the new season. They played Clarksburg December 6, but lost in double overtime 69 – 77.

Walt Whitman High School took its last title in the 4A South Division in 2006. Last year, the team ended the season with eleven wins and thirteen losses. Eighth-year coach Chris Lun will be back again to lead the Vikings. The team played a close game against Poolesville on December 6, but lost 55-59.

Montgomery County Schools to Keep an Eye On

Col. Zadok Magruder High School is considered the favorite of the 4A West Division, finishing last year with twenty-two wins and four losses and a regional title. Dan Harwood will coach the Colonels for his twenty-second year. They played Dematha Catholic High School on Tuesday, but lost 75-58.

Springbrook High School took their last regional title in 2010 and led an impressive season under Coach Tom Crowell, with twenty-two wins and three losses. Magruder will remain a tough opponent for the Blue Devils, who were defeated by the Colonels in the 4A West Region final. They faced off against Northwest this Tuesday, and won 64-46.

Winston Churchill High School has had the most wins within the 4A South Division program, and ended last year with eighteen wins and six losses. Though a regional title has eluded the Bulldogs since the ‘70s, Coach Matt Miller is looking forward to the start of a solid season that includes five senior players. Churchill defeated Damascus on Tuesday with a score of 70 – 49.
