Start Smart When Remodeling Your Chevy Chase Home!

PaintCansHave you been thinking about remodeling your Chevy Chase or Bethesda home? If so, you’re part of a trend! A recent survey by home remodeling site Houzz shows that 53% of homeowners believe that now is a good time to remodel. Firming home values have renewed  interest in remodeling projects, especially concerning kitchens and baths.

It’s easy to go overboard when you remodel; a survey by Houzz shows that Americans spend an average of $28,000 on kitchen remodeling alone. And while kitchen renovations provide some return when you sell your home, you rarely see a dollar-for-dollar match. To help you get the most out of your remodeling plans, I’ve included these tips to help you!

Budgeting and Planning: The Keys to Successful Remodeling

  1. Start by deciding your primary goals. What really needs replacing and upgrading? For example, you may need new kitchen cabinets, but that doesn’t mean your sink has to go.
  2. Next, decide when your project needs to be done. Please keep in mind that contractors are getting busier, and they may not be able to start your project the minute you want them to.
  3. Determine your budget. Do you have the  funds set aside to complete your project? Will you need to finance any of it?
  4. Interview contractors, and get at least three estimates. Beware of bids that are too cheap compared to the norms. The contractor may be cutting corners, or he may plan to spring extra costs on you later.
  5. Compare the estimates to your budget. Are you still in good shape? Or do you need to scale-down your plans?
  6. Consider your contractors and make an informed choice. Ask for referrals. Check to see if there are any complaints  against them with the Better Business Bureau.
  7. Also be sure to choose someone you can comfortably work with – personality conflicts will add stress to the process.
  8. Last but not least, be sure to have realistic expectations about what you may recover when you sell your home. It’s a good idea to contact me first and see what your home is worth as-is.  I can provide insights about the renovations that may improve the value of your DC Metro home.
