Why Leaves Change Color

Chevy Chase is one of the lucky parts of the world where the annual autumn color change is something to look forward to. We read an interesting article on the process, and wanted to share some highlights:

  • Leaf pigments, weather, and the length of the night all contribute to the yellow, orange and red leaves we see in the fall. The key factor? Length of night.
  • A trio of pigments make up the vibrant fall color palette: Chlorophyll – creates green. Carotenoids – produces yellow, orange, and browns. Anthocyanins – creates reds and purples.
  • Different plant species have different clocks for turning into their particular autumn colors…sometimes even getting a jump start in late summer!
  • Temperature & moisture impact the amount of and brilliance of autumn colors. Cool & crisp nights with warm, sunny days tends to produce spectacular color displays. Warm fall temperatures can mute the leaves’ vibrancy.
  • There’s a Fall Color Hotline to guide you to the most spectacular foliage displays! The number is 800-354-4595.
  • And you can find in-depth information on the how’s & why’s of foliage color change on the U.S. Forest Service’s website.
