What Is History Pin?

Ever wondered what life in Chevy Chase was like at the turn of the century? A new website called History Pin can actually give you the chance to see photographs of towns and cities all over Maryland, from the twenty-first century to the 1840s.

Who came up with History Pin?

The site was created by the British based non-profit We Are What We Do. It launched in July with the goal of bringing communities together to discuss local history. It allows users to place photographs, videos or recordings with a date and city on a virtual map of the United States.

Users can provide brief stories about the historical background of the photograph as well. While other historical materials like letters and diary entries cannot be posted, History Pin is hoping to add a new function to include these items by the beginning of next year.

Users can also create tours that connect content of an area with a background narrative, which can focus on a specific time, place or theme.

Chevy Chase on History Pin

Two Library of Congress photographs of Chevy Chase feature the Chevy Chase club from 1915-1925. The other photograph shows members of the men’s tennis club from 1927 – 1929.

Although these are the only two pictures posted so far, there are plenty of pictures pinned to the Maryland and Washington DC area. One photograph from Matthew Brady Studios showed officers of the 55th Infantry during the Civil War, posted near Palisades, Washington DC. Many of the postings, however, don’t necessarily focus on a well-known historical event or place. Close to Chevy Chase, pinnings include a photograph of Lafayette Park in 1919 as well as a Library of Congress picture of a house for sale near Lamond Riggs in 1921.

So whether you’re a history buff, or are just interested in Chevy Chase history, be sure to check out this fascinating website.
