Are you an aspiring writer hoping to get published one day? You may not have to wait as long as you think. Chevy Chase bookstore and coffee shop Politics and Prose now offers “Opus,” a book-printing machine. While self-publishing has gained popularity through websites like Lulu.com, Politics and Prose’s new self-publishing option gives authors the chance to actually see their manuscript become a book. Authors are given full control over the creation and distribution of their work. Unlike many self-publishing outlets, the staff will be available to personally assist authors through the publishing process.

What Can Opus Do?

With a PDF of a brand new manuscript, out-of-copyright books or copyright books available from publishers, customers can watch Opus transform the file into a book in a matter of minutes. The book’s interior pages are printed in black and white, while covers are printed in color. Pricing varies depending on how you want the cover or if you want an alteration to your PDF. However, the cost for printing is $7 plus two cents a page.

About Politics and Prose

Politics and Prose has always played an active role in the Chevy Chase community for quite some time. It started in 1984 and has grown ever since, merging with children’s bookstore Cheshire Cat in 1999. Despite the name, there is a wide selection of fiction books, as well as works on global and national themes, children’s stories, poetry and travel. Along with events throughout the year, classes are offered on reading and writing various genres.

Upcoming Events at Politics and Prose

There are plenty of opportunities to listen to authors give readings throughout the week. Starting tomorrow, biographer Charles J. Shields will be featured for his latest work And So It Goes: Kurt Vonnegut: A Life at 7 p.m. Be sure to check this out if you have the chance.

Have any thoughts on self-publishing? As always, feel free to share.
