Martin’s Additions Chevy Chase Coyote Sighting

The Village at Martin’s Additions

The recent heat wave isn’t the only reason to keep your pets inside! Recently, there was a coyote spotted in the Martin’s Additions Chevy Chase community. The coyote was seen in Shephered Street Park, right at the end of Turner Lane in the Village of Martin’s Additions. There are many things to keep in mind when dealing with wild animals, especially coyotes.

According to reports, the coyote spotted seemed to be a full grown and healthy looking adult. Notices were sent out to all Martin’s Additions homes, but of course, the following information is good for all of us in the area to keep in mind:

  • Coyotes are generally nocturnal and seldom seen
  • Usually coyotes are spotted as they move from parts of territory to another in search of food, ie small mammals like mice and voles-though a small dog or cat would be a target for an extremely hungry coyote.
  • Coyotes should be scared away by your presences, if they demonstrate natural behavior. Because of the encroachment of humans on their territory, some coyotes have become accustomed to seeing humans, and may not show shy fear that normally is associated with them-not being afraid is not necessarily a sign of Rabies or aggression-they maybe just be desensitized to us.
  • In heavily populated city or community areas, coyotes may have come to depend on unsecured garbage and pet food left outside as their main sources of food-these are the coyotes that may begin to approach humans looking for a handout

If you live in the Chevy Chase area, or are thinking of relocating to Chevy Chase MD, don’t let the coyote spotting worry you. In fact, coyote attacks on people are extremely rare and coyotes are actually very valuable in an urban ecosystem as a major predator of mice, rats and Canadian geese, who can become pests when their population goes unchecked. Just keep in mind to not leave pet food or trash where it could be easily accesable to any wild animal-raccoons and coyotes included. And should you ever come across any wild animal, make sure to keep a good distance, slowly back away, and contact your local animal control for assistance.
