6 Ways to Find the Right DC Area Neighborhood

DC real estateWhen you are planning a move, it’s important to find the right DC area neighborhood to suit your needs and lifestyle. In order to evaluate all your choices in DC, Chevy Chase and Bethesda, you should have some basic parameters in mind.

Here is a guide you can follow whether you are looking at homes in Friendship Heights or Woodley Park or any other neighborhood. These tips are from relocation.com, and we’ve included our own advice as well!

Scouting Your DC Area Neighborhoods

1. Be a frequent visitor. Observe the neighborhood during rush hours and the middle of the day. Check it out at night. How is the noise, traffic and parking?  Are the homes and buildings well-kept?

2. Look for amenities that compliment your lifestyle. Are you looking for family parks and green space? Do you prefer an active neighborhood with plenty of night life? Check the distance to retail stores, restaurants and basic necessities.

3. Know the distance to medical care. How far away is your potential new home from a hospital and clinic? Hopefully you won’t need it very often, but you don’t want to wait until you do, to figure this out.

4. Evaluate the school system. Even if you do not have children, the quality of the local schools impact neighborhood desirability, and therefore your resale value.

5. Research crime rates. No area is completely crime-free; but having your eyes open about area police reports and crime incidents help you minimize risks.

6. Look for public transportation. You can find commuter rail and bus routes, along with schedules, at the Washington Metro Transportation website.
