Mather Gorge

The Mather Gorge sits just below Great Falls. It is cut by the Potomac River with Maryland on one side and Virginia on the other. The gorge was named after Stephen Mather, who was the first director of the National Park Service. Kayakers who frequent this section can enjoy rapids ranging from Class I (lowest) to Class VI (highest).
